Single-use plastic products and fishing gear containing plastic are a significant source of marine litter, and pose a severe risk to marine ecosystems, to biodiversity and to human health. Litter damages activities such as tourism, fisheries and shipping. In 2019, the SUP Directive was adopted to prevent and reduce the impacts of their waste on marine environment. This initiative will evaluate the impact of the Directive’s measures. Its outcome will serve as the basis for any possible subsequent updates or amendments of the SUP Directive.
